Free English classes in Perth
Conversation groups and classes in libraries and community centres, with address, time, what a session is like and how to join. If your visa improves, the courses with a certificate are further down.

Perth has free English groups and classes in libraries and community centres, and none of them asks for a particular visa: you just turn up and practise. If you want classes with a teacher, levels and a certificate, there is AMEP, also free, but only for some visas; on a student visa it usually does not apply.
Days and times may change. Before you go, call or check each place’s official page.

Courses for when your visa improves
This is structured teaching, with a teacher, levels and a certificate. It depends on your visa. AMEP is the only free route with childcare. If you are already eligible, register soon: the 2026-27 Budget announced "targeted" eligibility cuts, but they need changes to the law and no bill was found as of 8 October.

Frequently asked questions about free English in Perth
The NopalMates list has 40 groups and classes in Perth libraries and community centres, 21 in the centre and north and 19 in the south and east, none with a published visa condition. Days and times may change: confirm before you go. Checked on 8 October 2026.
Probably not. The Student 500 visa does not appear in Home Affairs’ official AMEP lists, but no page names the excluded visas one by one, so it is an inferred "no". Confirm with a provider or Home Affairs (131 881) before ruling yourself out. The library conversation groups do not publish a visa condition.
Yes, a few. At night: Stirling Libraries in Scarborough, Tuesday 18:00–19:00 (no dates, call to confirm); Victoria Park Library, Monday 16:30–18:00; Bassendean Memorial Library, Monday 17:00–18:30. On Saturday: the ESL Conversation Group at Manning Library, Saturday 11:00–12:00. AMEP also offers evening (18:00–21:00) and Saturday classes, but only with an eligible visa.
In most, no. City of Perth Library asks you to book (TryBooking; currently with a waiting list), Stirling Libraries in Mirrabooka requires it (on Humanitix; check that the ticket is $0) and Mercy Works in Belmont requires registration (per a 2025 flyer). In others the sources contradict each other, for example Victoria Park and Nedlands: call the library before you go.
At the WA local fee, about AUD 160 to 250 per semester (an estimate, not an official figure). Published example: AUD 252.45 for the South Metro TAFE Course in EAL. Anyone who does not qualify for the local fee pays the commercial fee; on a Student 500 visa you pay in full at TAFE International WA. You need a free USI at usi.gov.au. Ask TAFE when applications for the next semester close.
The library conversation groups do not give a certificate or assess your level. A certificate comes from AMEP (Course in EAL and Certificate I to III, free with an eligible visa) or from paid TAFE courses (Initial EAL, Course in EAL, Certificates I to IV).
Start with the free groups on this page: none publishes a visa condition. If you need classes with a teacher, look at the TAFE local or commercial fee and ask North Metro TAFE Perth for its English enrolment dates. Before ruling yourself out, confirm your case with Home Affairs (131 881); NopalMates does not give migration advice.
Yes. Call TIS National on 131 450, say "Spanish" and ask to be connected to the library or provider. On your first call to AMEP, ask for the next start date, your level, the waiting list, the childcare spots and whether there is an evening or Saturday option.
Good to know
- None of the groups gives a certificate or assesses your level. They are guided conversation or informal classes. Structured teaching is AMEP (eligible visas only) or a paid TAFE course.
- Statuses: "Confirmed" has sessions with published dates for this period. "Current" has an active page in 2026 with no dates. "Unverified" and "Older data" may have closed. "To be confirmed" was a confirmed entry whose dates have now passed.
- What the session is like: only what the official pages say. When they do not describe it, it shows "No data".
- Calling with an interpreter: TIS National, 131 450, say "Spanish" and ask to be connected to the library.
- Left out of the list: Mirrabooka Info Hub (help with paperwork), CARAD (literacy for refugees), citizenship classes at Hillview and the Reading Writing Hotline (1300 6 555 06) are not English classes.
